Picking the correct network switches is one of the most important design decisions. At JCOM Automation Inc., we are pleased to offer a great line of switches by Helmholz. These switches are well made and easy to use.
Their switches are divided into either managed or unmanaged. All of their managed switches are designed for PROFINET. Their unmanaged switches will also work on a PROFINET network.

Switches
Helmholz makes 4, 5, 8 and 16 port managed and unmanaged switches! They are made with German quality and North American ease of use. The switches have a small footprint taking up minimal panel space but with all the functionality you need. They work well with both Ethernet IP and Modbus TCP.
Just in case you are wondering, Yes, you do want a managed switch! You can save some money by going with an unmanaged switch but the first time your network has an issue, you are going to be wishing that you had a managed switch with all the diagnostics! Yes, we also troubleshoot Industrial Ethernet networks, so our opinion is biased!

PROFINET managed switches
One of the most important functions of a PROFINET-Switch is the prioritizing of the PROFINET frame traffic in the machine network. The managed switch can differentiate whether the frame is a web query, an FTP file transmission, a media stream, or a PROFINET frame. In the case of a high transmission load, the important frames can thus be prioritized in order to prevent frame losses.
Their PROFINET managed switches are classed a PROFINET Conformance class B. They come in three forms:
- Standard flat swiches in 100 Mbps version. This is designed for small netloads
- IP67 version
- FLEXtra line, which has fiber-optics options and is designed for medium size netloads and supports 1 Gbit Ethernet.

Helmholz SFP module for FLEXtra switches
The Helmholz plug-in transceivers according to the SFP standard enable the connection of fiber optic cables to the FLEXtra switches with FO ports. The SFP modules support an Ethernet transmission rate of 1 Gbit/s. The SFP transceiver modules should always be installed in pairs with a technically suitable fiber optic cable.
The SFP modules are available in versions for single and multimode fiber optic cables. The SFP modules are designed for fiber optic cables with LC connectors.

Helmholz FLEXtra managed switch
The managed FLEXtra PROFINET switch can be used to network PROFINET components with 100 Mbps as well as Ethernet nodes with up to 1000 Mbps. PROFINET prioritization according to Conformance Class B of the machine components is always guaranteed.
The FLEXtra PROFINET switch is available with 16x RJ45 ports, or 12x RJ45 and 4x SFP ports, or 8x RJ45 and 2x SFP ports.

Unmanaged switches
The Helmholz unmanaged Ethernet switches are suitable for a variety of industrial applications because of their very compact design. The lightweight and tough industrial design is suitable for mounting on a DIN rail and can be easily integrated into your network. Once plugged in, it’s ready for use thanks to the simple Plug & Play solution.
Their unmanaged switches are all classed as PROFINET Conformance class A. They can be used with any protocol. They come in three forms:
- Standard flat switches which are either 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps version. These are both designed for small netloads.
- IP67 version
- FLEXtra line, which has fiber-optics options and is designed for medium size netloads and supports 1 Gbit Ethernet.
Helmholz 5-Port unmanaged switch
With this version (shown above) of the unmanaged Ethernet-Switch, you can connect up to 5 Ethernet participants with 10 or 100 Mbps.
There is also a version to connect up to 5 Ethernet participants with up to 1000 Mbps. A mixed operation with devices that support only 10 or 100 Mbit is possible without configuration effort.

Helmholz 16-Port unmanaged switch

Helmholz FLEXtra Ethernet switch, unmanaged
The Helmholz FLEXtra Ethernet switch unmanaged for up to 1000 Mbit (Gigabit) can be used for a wide range of industrial applications thanks to its very compact design. The lightweight yet robust industrial design is suitable for DIN rail mounting and is very easy to integrate into your network.
The FLEXtra Ethernet switch unmanaged is suitable for PROFINET networks and complies with PROFINET Conformance Class A.
With the FLEXtra 16x RJ45 Ethernet switch you can connect up to 16 Ethernet nodes with up to 1000 Mbps or with the FLEXtra 12x RJ45 / 4x SFP switch you can connect up to 12 Ethernet nodes via RJ45 and 4 nodes via SFP fiber with up to 1000 Mbps.
Mixed operation with devices that only support 10 or 100 Mbit is possible without configuration effort.

Helmholz 8-Port unmanaged switch
With this variant of the unmanaged Ethernet-Switch, you can connect up to 8 Ethernet participants with 10 or 100 Mbps.

Helmholz FLEXtra Slim
This unmanaged Ethernet switch impresses with its lightweight yet robust design. Thanks to its ultra-compact and space-saving design, it is also suitable for control cabinets with limited space. This switch complies with PROFINET Conformance Class A. Connect up to 5 Ethernet devices at 10 or 100 Mbit/s.
